She says the best part of teaching is building confidence in young people. \u201cI am ultimately trying to grow successful people who work hard, are kind to others, and make our world a better place no matter what profession they go into,\u201d she says. \u201cIf I can light a spark of inspiration in the hearts of my students, my hope is that they will continue to push themselves to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-12141-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-12141-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div class=\"profile-image panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-12141-1-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-13306 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/up.uscupstate.edu\/archive\/winter2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jami-Guker-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Profile photo of Jami Guker\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Jami Guker '02<\/h3>\n<p><strong>District 4; State finalist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jami Guker, \u201902, has taught math at Woodruff Middle School for all 21 of her years in the classroom. What she loves most about teaching is connecting with her students and forming relationships with them that often last a lifetime. \u201cMy goal as their math teacher is to empower them with knowledge,\u201d Guker says. She particularly enjoys changing the mindset of students who don\u2019t think they\u2019re good at math and showing them they can do anything. Guker adds, \u201cI also love my job because I have the opportunity to encourage my students to never give up and to become the best individual they can possibly be. As stated in the book \u2018Change Your World,\u2019 I may not be able to change the entire world, but I can change someone\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-12141-1-2\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-12141-1-2-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div class=\"profile-image panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-12141-1-2-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-13309 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/up.uscupstate.edu\/archive\/winter2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Marissa-Drake-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Profile photo of Marissa Drake\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Marissa Drake, '12<\/h3>\n<p><strong>District 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marissa Drake, \u201912, is a third-grade teacher at Mayo Elementary School. She has been in the classroom for nearly 10 years, and has taught at Mayo since 2019. She says the most rewarding thing about being a teacher is being able to create memorable learning experiences for her students. \u201cWhether I\u2019m dressed up as magician because they worked hard on a particular mathematics skill and are now \u2018math-magicians,\u2019 or learning how to sing a song in another language to celebrate diversity, I\u2019m always engaging with my students,\u201d Drake says. \u201cI want my students to enter our classroom as their authentic identities, and celebrate who they are as a person, not just as a student.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-12141-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-12141-2\" ><div id=\"pgc-12141-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-12141-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"profile-image panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-12141-2-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-13308 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/up.uscupstate.edu\/archive\/winter2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Leslie-Borton-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Profile photo of Leslie Bortonf\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Leslie Borton, '19<\/h3>\n<p><strong>South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leslie Borton, \u201919, has been a teacher for three years and an administrator for two. She is currently lead teacher at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, and previously taught at Cedar Springs Academy. She previously taught fifth grade at Berry Shoals Elementary School in District 5 and fourth and second grades at Spartanburg Prep.
