She currently serves as the chair of the Engineering Economy Division, American Society for Engineering Education. She also co-authored \u201cA Unit Commitment Model for Optimal Vehicle-to-Grid Operation in a Power System\u201d in the International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems and \u201cPush Them Forward: Challenges in Quasi-Governmental Organizations\u2019 Influence on Rural Broadband Infrastructure Expansion\u201d in Government Information Quarterly. She recently presented at the International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Technologies in Bol, Croatia, and the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference and Exposition in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ron Fulbright<\/strong> (Informatics) was granted a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for his \u201cSwarm-Based Firefighting Drone and Mass Aerial Drop System and Method.\u201d The patent covers several design features of a drone customizing flight time and lifting capacity while also reducing the cost of manufacture and operation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polinpapilinho Katina<\/strong> (Advanced Manufacturing Management) published research in four different journals: Discrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, Evaluation, International Journal of System of Systems Engineering, and Journal of Cleaner Production. He also co-edited, and contributed to, the new book \u201cComplex System Governance: Theory and Practice.\u201d He presented two research papers at the 2022 ASEM International Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida, and was part of the team that was awarded the 2022 Meritorious Service Award by the American Society for Engineering Management.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12814\" src=\"https:\/\/up.uscupstate.edu\/archive\/winter2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Lancaster_cover_front.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/up.uscupstate.edu\/archive\/winter2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Lancaster_cover_front.jpg 418w, https:\/\/up.uscupstate.edu\/archive\/winter2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Lancaster_cover_front-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/>Lex Lancaster<\/strong> (Art History) is the author of the new book \u201cDragging Away: Queer Abstraction in Contemporary Art.\u201d Their book is the first to be published on the topic of queer abstraction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kim Land<\/strong> (Marketing) was named director of the Honors Program at USC Upstate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shirleatha Lee<\/strong> (Nursing) was appointed to the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Standards Committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walter Lee<\/strong> (Education) facilitated two sessions at the annual meeting of the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) in Orlando. Accompanying Lee were students Shaekwon Heard and Rebekah Long, who represented Upstate in the inaugural class of student ambassadors. Heard and Long also presented with Lee at one of the sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Lorenz<\/strong> (LLC) authored \u201cCorrect Me if I\u2019m Wrong: Student Attitudes towards Learning Russian Grammar\u201d in the forthcoming collection \u201cStudent-Centered Approaches to Russian Language Teaching.\u201d With student Dawson Adams, he published \u201cOrigins of Religion: A Comparison Between the United States and Germany\u201d in the SC Upstate Research Journal. He also received a Scholarly Startup Grant for his research on the life and language of German immigrants in South Carolina and their economic, cultural and linguistic contributions to the Upstate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Marlow<\/strong> (LLC) published two articles this year, both with a Chinese scholar who visited the U.S. in the 2019-20 academic year: \u201cChinese Ecolinguistics: Development and Contribution to the Discipline\u201d in ECO-REBEL and \u201cToward a More Transcultural Ecolinguistics: Applying Harmonious Discourse Analysis to 'Ode to Autumn'\u201d in the Southern Journal of Linguistics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benjamin McCraw<\/strong> (HPPA) published \u201cAlston, Aristotle, and Epistemic Normativity\u201d in Logos and Episteme: An International Journal of Epistemology, and has two forthcoming articles: \u201cDuncan Pritchard on the Epistemic Value of Truth: Revision or Revolution?\u201d in Philosophia and \u201cEpistemic Virtues\u201d in Oxford Bibliographies in Philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Mueller<\/strong> (Education) authored the article \u201cA Conversation Too Late: An Examination of Early-Career Teachers\u2019 Experiences With New Social Studies Standards,\u201d which was recently published in Social Studies Teaching and Learning, and her article \u201c\u2019More Resilient Than I Thought\u2019: Examining the Stress of Teaching Through COVID-19,\u201d was accepted for publication in the Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melissa Pilgrim<\/strong> (Biology) was the recipient of USC Upstate\u2019s 2021-22 Faculty Excellence in Service award for her contributions to the RISE program; her work as a reviewer on many grant proposals, manuscripts and awards; and her community service with SPACE and the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Josh Ruppel<\/strong> (Chemistry) spoke on \u201cCuAAC Glycosylation of Porphyrinoids: Preliminary Effects of Linker Length on the Photodynamic Inactivation of Mycobacterium\u201d at the 12<sup>th<\/sup> International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (ICPP-12) in Madrid, Spain. He also is the co-principal investigator on a $402,695 National Institutes of Health grant, half of which will support research activities at USC Upstate, including paid summer research positions for students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sharda Jackson Smith<\/strong> (Education) received a 2022 Distinguished Research &amp; Practice Fellows Award from the National Education Finance Academy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nolan Stolz<\/strong> (Commercial Music) served as the commercial music representative on the editorial board of a new series, \u201cCollege Music Society Pedagogies &amp; Innovations in Music.\u201d The first book in the series, \u201cCommercial and Popular Music in Higher Education,\u201d was published this summer. He also presented research about Black Sabbath's music at an international conference on progressive rock held at the University of Oxford (England). In April, Stolz was the special guest for the season one finale of the \"Heavy Metal 101\" podcast to discuss Black Sabbath's first eight albums. From February to July, Stolz gave over 40 interviews about his forthcoming Route 66 Suite for orchestra, appearing on over 90 TV stations, in over 80 newspapers, and on over 80 radio stations in the U.S. and Europe (including local and regional NPR stations).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ginny Webb<\/strong> (NSE) co-authored, with <strong>Justin Travis<\/strong> (Psychology) and student Brianna Sacchetti, \u201cIdentification of the Main Contributors to Blood Culture Contamination at a Tertiary Care Academic Medical Center\u201d in Infection Prevention in Practice and \u201cEffects of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Blood Culture Contamination at a Tertiary Care Academic Medical Center\u201d in Microbiology Spectrum. With Sacchetti, she co-authored \u201cFactors Affecting Blood Culture Contamination Rates and Effective Reduction Measures\u201d in Reviews and Research in Medical Microbiology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-10879-2-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">RISE Recipients<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Fourteen USC Upstate faculty were awarded RISE (Research Initiatives for Summer Engagement) grants from the University of South Carolina Office of the Vice President for Research.
